Six things that add time to a Wellington house move

  • Hill sections and steps

    Kelburn, Wadestown and Mount Victoria are full of houses reached by a long flight of steps. A 3-bedroom house means a few hundred trips up and down them.

  • Steep or narrow driveways

    Plenty of driveways in Karori and Brooklyn are too tight or too steep for a moving truck. If the crew parks on the street and walks the load down, the move takes longer.

  • Parking on the day

    A clear space outside the gate saves carrying. On busy streets, park your car out front the night before to hold the spot.

  • The big stuff

    Wardrobes and American fridges need extra hands, straps or a partly dismantled path through the house.

  • Packing

    Packing on the day adds hours. Ask Dan about the packing service if you would rather not do it yourself.

  • Distance and traffic

    Karori to Tawa means the Ngauranga Gorge at peak hour, and Masterton moves cross the Rimutakas, where wind and slips slow the truck.

    We enlisted the services of Dan and his Team for our shift from storage in Palmerston North to present our property prior to going on the market in Belmont, Lower Hutt We could not praise Relocationz more highly . The shift included very fragile items and also extremely heavy items accumulated from five generational properties. We personally found the prospect of getting our 'treasures' out of storage after 10 years particularly daunting, however the "Relocationz" Team didn't blink an eyelid. They arrived in Palmerston North at 10am and the furniture had been placed in the double storied house in Lower Hutt by the end of the day. We also called on Dan and his team member to assist with reloading and stacking our container after various items had been re-packed. They also offered to take items to the Salvation Army for us, which we were hugely appreciative of as we were under a particularly tight time-frame. The property has since successfully sold and we will once again enlist the services of Dan and his Team with regard to vacant possession prior to settlement.     Update 06.09.26- I have used Relocationz ltd for my 3rd move and they were great yet again! I’ve used Relocationz for both my moves now and they’ve been great each time! Speedy and reliable, a great service. The second move was done a steep zig zag path and they were so helpful and managed it without a problem! We move houses in Karori, Khandallah, Ngaio, Johnsonville, Churton Park, Tawa, Island Bay and Miramar, and across the harbour in Petone, Belmont and Stokes Valley. North of the city we cover Whitby, Paremata and Plimmerton, with Transmission Gully taking the truck on to Paraparaumu and Waikanae. The same hourly rates apply across the region, though anywhere outside Wellington has travel charged from our base.

How long does it take to move a 3-bedroom house in Wellington?

About 2.5 hours with two movers when the boxes are packed and the truck parks close at both ends. A house reached by steps in Kelburn or a long driveway in Karori can take 4 hours or more. Send Dan photos of the access and he will give you an honest estimate before you book.

Should I pack before the crew arrives?

Yes, for the lowest price. Have boxes packed, taped and labelled by room, beds stripped and drawers emptied if they go down steps. The crew handles furniture, whiteware and the boxes. If you would rather not do it, RelocatioNZ offers a packing service at $175 an hour including GST, with materials on top. Ask Dan when you get your quote.

How many movers do I need for a 4-bedroom house?

Two movers can do it, and the from price of $735 is based on two. Dan often recommends a third mover for a 4-bedroom house with a lot of furniture or awkward access, which shortens the day. An extra mover costs $75 per hour including GST.

Are my belongings insured during the move?

RelocatioNZ does not carry goods in transit insurance. The crew wraps and blankets your furniture and treats it as their own, but cover for loss or damage sits with you. Check whether your home and contents policy covers items in transit, and tell Dan about anything of high value before moving day so it can be packed and loaded with extra care.

Do you charge for travel time?

RelocatioNZ charges by the hour from arrival to when the last item is in at your new home, plus a 30-minute travel charge for getting the truck to you. There is no charge for the drive home at the end. The drive between your old and new house is part of the move, so a Tawa to Island Bay shift costs more than a move within Karori.
